That cash I spent yesterday on the Installing Sky Digital TV manual is probably going to save my father at least £100 when they take the new sky digital system to France in March. Friends paid the local satellite fitters in France, the equivalent of £100 each to get their systems aligned (not fitted!). Reading the manual last night I have already learned so much, details that will make purchasing the kit here in Wales a lot easier, and will head off problems in France - Cable speccing, alignment with minimal kit, little fitting tips. Well worth a few quid! Fitting the satellite dish won't be a problem; the previous owner left the TV aerial on the roof, along with suitable brackets (checked against our Sky system here in Wales), therefore that side of it is sorted. Using your excellent manual will make the alignment and setup a lot easier than the alternative.

Just thought I'd send you a short note to let you know how we got on with our £100 brand new Sky outfit down in France. Firstly, I purchased your, just to get a bit of knowledge so to speak. The thought of paying the local satellite installer in France £100 was off-putting to say the least.
Your book confirmed this - it can be done with a bit of patience. This book is truly the bible of Sky Digital self installation. You carefully explain the principles behind the transmissions, what you need and some of the technical terms which come in very handy when chatting to the Sky retailer. We purchased the Sky dish and box with an FTV card from a dealer in South Wales for £100. I don't know how it was so cheap. Didn't ask any questions, just answered his questions. 'Which box would you prefer?'
- Chose the Panasonic TU-DSB31 and walked out of his shop five minutes later with a fully authorised Sky outfit with dish and card. He seemed quite impressed, and I would say intimidated, that a mere punter knew about CT100 grade cable. and self amalgamating tape etc. CT100 is no longer manufactured. For recommendations click.
This then sat quietly in its cardboard box for a month or so, awaiting the trip down to the cottage in France (Montmorillon, 45 mins south of Poitiers). I got it out, just a few days before the trip down, to wake the card up, just in case.
The dish and box were fitted by my brother and father, using the instructions in your excellent booklet and a borrowed compass, nothing more. They started as you suggest by finding the satellite with dish on the ground, then fitting the dish to the wall. The signal we receive in France is better than the signal we get here in South Wales!! I have yet to see this as I was tied by work to remain in the UK.
Dad was at first a bit cynical about the booklet and the fact that I'd paid several pound out 'on a whim', but I persisted and told him to read the installation bit and how to build the cable. He was suitably impressed, but still came back with a cynical edge. It wasn't until they returned home last week, that he was fully converted. His exact words were 'That book was a bloody godsend!' He told friends of ours who paid the full Sky price of £288 for their kit, and £100 to the French installer, how much we'd set ours up for and they were genuinely amazed. I mean £108 for British TV in France can't be bad.
Just as a test, dad took a bit of standard coax down with them and ran the kit from that during setup, and was impressed by the difference that CT100 gives. It seems to be a much better quality of cable, seemingly more able to handle the temperatures down in France. Incidentally, on the day that they set the system up, the temperature on the patio was 32 degrees C, so the decision was made to run the cable slightly up under the roof overhang to provide some shielding from the direct sunlight.CT100 is no longer manufactured. All that info, and at such a phenomenally reasonable price. Those who baulk at paying the price should really examine what £8 buys these days. I am almost too embarrassed to write this email. The reason why I AM writing it is: a) You have solved my problem for me, b) I know you appreciate feedback, c) I used to work on a technical hotline answering questions from so called 'technicians' who would never admit that they had made a mistake and I vowed I would never be like them.
So here it is. The first time I contacted you (months ago) it was to ask your advice on switching from one sat dish to another using only one digibox.
I ordered the CSO12 LNB switch from you, which you kindly sent to Germany. I tried it out, but it didn't work as I expected and you asked me to send it back (even though I'd snipped a cable off the scart connector) with no charge (excellent service). During this period, I tried various methods and components to switch from one dish to another. When using another type of switch, one of the things I tried was deactivating the the 22kHz option in the installers setup menu. You guessed it, After receiving your reply to my latest email, something started nagging in this pea-sized brain of mine as you had mentioned 22kHz. All day at work today, I knew I had to get home and look through the settings again. Home at six, reminded myself how to get into the installers setup and there it was, 22kHz = off!!
Needless to say I now have all the missing channels back, although when my friend in the UK finds out what I did, I will have something else missing soon. Why didn't I connect the fault with changing the 22kHz setting? I mean, this kind of logical thinking is something I had to do when answering calls on the technical hotline.
Could it have been: a) A lack of understanding of the system? B) I may have not tried to watch an effected channel for a couple of days after messing about with the settings? C) I am a prat?

And, although a lot of the information is out there somewhere, how long will it take you to find it and collate it so you can understand it? Bear in mind that there is also a lot of BAD information out there.
People are probably well-intentioned but they just plain get it WRONG. You can't trust it. And a lot of the information USED to be correct but now it's out of date - so it's wrong. Take, for example, the move of BBC in 2003. How many web sites still tell you that you need a Sky Digibox and a viewing card to watch BBC? You'll find information relating to old ANALOGUE systems; that's not much use to you.
You'll find information relating to foreign transmissions; that's not much use, either, if you want to receive UK English Sky programmes. Why not get the right now? Or perhaps you can find a pirate copy that you don't have to pay for; or a cheaper copy on Ebay? Well, maybe you can, but it will be ILLEGAL and OUT OF DATE. Which means the information is wrong. Worse than worthless, because it's misleading. It will waste your valuable time.
You might even buy something you don't need. I keep this eBook updated. Every time I hear of a change, I rewrite the eBook. And you get free lifetime updates when you buy it!
So if you want the most up to date information,. You are probably asking yourself: 'How does he know about Sky Digital anyway?
