Hello, I am new to HP Forums. I have tried to search these forums for a working solution for my issue, without success. I apologize if I have provided too much information all at once.

I see many people seem to have problems with the HP ToolboxFX software. Thanks to anyone that can help me solve my current issue. Product: HP LaserJet Pro M1536dnf MFP Model: CE538A Firmware Date: 20140630 (was 20100615) Computer: Dell OptiPlex 980 Mini-Tower OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit SP1 RAM: 8GB Background:. We have a small quantity (4 via USB, 2 via wired Ethernet) of this model AIO printer in use here since 2010. I have never had any problems printing to or scanning from these printers. The HP ToolboxFX software DID function on my PC without issue until it was recently uninstalled.

I have never tested the Faxing function of the printer connected to my PC, so I don’t know if that part of it works. The fax function does work on another (same model) printer installed on our network. Originally this printer was connected to my PC via the supplied USB cable and installed using the supplied HP software media (Installer v1.5.6.4020 I believe).

My PC had a couple USB ports that did not work, and during the troubleshooting process, a second copy of this printer became installed and linked to a different USB port. I wanted to see if I could have HP ToolboxFX deliver faxes received on one of our networked HP LaserJet Pro M1536dnf MFP printers to my PC instead of another PC currently receiving these faxes. So I thought I would uninstall the printer and software on my PC and reinstall it using the updated software (Installer v3.0.3.5253) downloaded from the HP website. That is when my problems started.

Problem:. HP ToolboxFX seems to be running in the system tray, but when I right click the system tray icon and select “Open HP ToolboxFX”, I receive a popup error window. By the way, the printers name no longer appears in the right click context menu.

It has been a little busy here, so I have not been able to try some things until Friday evening.

Unfortunately, the suggestions did not help. The Norton Internet Security suite does not seem to be causing the issue. Disabling it was one of the first things I tried a couple of weeks ago. Restarting ToolboxFX by right clicking its system try icon and selecting Exit, then starting it again in the Start menu does not help. Restarting the computer does not help, with or without the printer already powered on. I really wanted to avoid doing a System Restore to the point when ToolboxFX worked. Distant System Restores tend to have side effects, and always breaks the Norton AV suite, requiring its reinstallation.

Being willing to try almost anything reasonable at this point, I did a System Restore, but this DID NOT solve the HP software problem. Of course I had to uninstall and reinstall the Norton AV software. The good thing is the Norton software does not break itself (or anything else) during this process. I did run the HP Print and Scan Doctor program.

It concluded everything is working correctly. As the name implies, I assumed it is meant to find/solve “printing” and “scanning” problems. Lucky for me, I have never had any problems printing or scanning, only getting the ToolboxFX software to work, after reinstallation. So I uninstalled the old HP software and reinstalled the latest version from that website. So I am still left with a working printer and scanner, just no way to use ToolboxFX to receive faxes to my computer. I do have other network HP printers/plotters installed on my computer.

None of which use ToolboxFX. We also have 2 HP LaserJet Pro M1536dnf MFP printers on our network, even though I do not have either of them installed as printers on my computer. I still have my printer connected via USB to my computer.

And yes, I did try a different USB port, even though it would not be logical that the port could allow bi-directional communication for printing and scanning and not allow communication for ToolboxFX. Since the HP software is leaving a large number of files and folders on the system after uninstallation, and likely abandoned information in the registry, I keep wondering if the installation process is seeing this old (possibly corrupt) information already there and not deleting and replacing it with the newer files and settings.

Sure would be nice if the uninstall process actually removed/unmodified what the install process adds/modifies. Hoping someone has some idea how to solve this software issue.

Thank you very much for your assistance. Hi, Thank you for the follow up, I appreciate the detail too. I can't help but wonder if something like CCleaner might help you to clean the registry up. From what you described, I have a feeling you might be right about the old information being 'stuck' so to stay.

I would suggest using something like to clean out the registry. Registry cleaners can be useful tools to solve certain kinds of problems in the registry, like those created when a program doesn't uninstall correctly or a malware infection isn't cleaned up properly. This suggestion does not come from an HP document, it is of my own opinion. My preference is CCleaner, I use it on my computers. If you have a registry cleaner already or one you prefer, you can use that. I do want to take a moment, in case I have not already, and thank you. In case you don’t want to read what I have most recently tried (below), the HP ToolboxFX software still DOES NOT WORK on my computer. It did work about a month ago. Sure wish someone here had some idea how to solve this.

Since there are still some old (2010) files and some registry entries left behind after uninstalling the HP software, that might be causing issues. If I feel like beating this dead horse some more, I might try a reinstall/uninstall using some registry snapshot software to see what it is changing/leaving behind. I have also read some old forum posts that confirm that ToolboxFX is dependent on.NET Framework, and it might be an OLD version (maybe v1.0 or v1.1). I have the current version (v4) installed, so that could be another issue. Of course it seems the HP staff has not felt it useful to post any sticky threads to help people that are having the same connection problems with ToolboxFX.

Perhaps they don’t know how to fix the problem either. Would be nice to know what the current software/hardware requirements are to make ToolboxFX happy. I guess HP PAY support might be the reason for that, but according to their terms, it appears they don’t support any software with a release date older than 180 days. Guess that only leaves Windows 10. Too bad for all us Win 8.1, Win 8, Win 7, and Win Vista users.

I have done some additional research and have come up with an idea. I can't help but wonder if we may have better success installing the full feature software and driver for an alternate printer, one with newer software. My theory is that if we can get a newer version of software with the Toolbox installed, we can use it instead. As I am a little confused, I have a few questions regarding your recommendation to install a software/driver package for a different HP product. Just so we are all on the same thought process, from what I can ascertain from the available documentation for the HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M177fw (CZ165A) product, it appears to. O- Use “HP Device Toolbox” and NOT “HP ToolboxFX”.

O- Does not seem to support sending received faxes to any attached or network computer, or a network share. O- It is a color device and not a B&W device. I noticed there were other products that more closely approximated the features of the LaserJet Pro M1536dnf MFP. If we do install another products Full Software/Drivers as you recommend, would I need to uninstall the existing software/drivers first, or just run the new installer and see what happens? I would assume the Color LaserJet Pro MFP M177fw software smart enough to figure out the correct product was not connected.

Would that not cause some of the software/driver install the fail? We are doing this just to see if the new “HP Device Toolbox” software can communicate with the existing printer, right?

When the original full software/driver was install sometime after 2010, the installed version Microsoft.NET was likely v2 or maybe v3. What is installed now. Okay, I talking to my Laserjet guru, and she explained that the.net framework updating forced software updates and Toolbox was lost on 64 bit systems. The updates are the root cause of the issue.

Although the ToolBoxFX will not work, I do have a solution to offer. My suggestion is to use the Printers Embedded Web Server as it will provide the same features the ToolBox did. If you can connect to the network using an Ethernet cable, you can get the IP address and enter it into an internet browser. The Embedded Web Server will load and you can get familiar with the features it offers.
